Children's Health

Cuts, coughs, and the occasional sprain from a fall are all part of growing up. What matters is how quickly we help children return to being active, happy, and healthy.

Children's healthcare needs, such as behavioural development, mental wellness, eye care and dental health, are different from those of adults. At our hospital, our paediatric specialists and nurses are sensitive to the well-being of young patients and your concerns as parents.

Like you, we take pride in your child's growth and development. Our friendly team of experts are here to nurse your child to health when they are ill and guide their transformation into well-adjusted individuals.

Raising a healthy child

From birth to adolescence, a child develops in leaps and bounds. Visible differences in height and body weight are not the only evidence of growth. Emotional and mental maturity are all part of their journey into adulthood.

Nutrition and physical activities play a big part in keeping your child safe and healthy. When a child falls ill, proper treatment and rest help them bounce back quickly.

Common childhood illnesses

Here is a list of common childhood illnesses affecting children in Singapore:

  • Fever is a raised body temperature of 38°C or above. It occurs as a response to the body fighting infection.
  • Upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) includes the common cold. It refers to infections affecting the upper portion of your child’s airway.
  • Bronchiolitis is a common viral chest infection that occurs in infants and young children.
  • Gastroenteritis, also known as the stomach flu, is an infection of your child’s stomach and intestines that may lead to diarrhoea, vomiting, or both.
  • Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is an illness caused by a group of viruses known as enteroviruses.
  • Chickenpox is a viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus.
  • Allergic rhinitis occurs when the body reacts to environmental allergens in the air, causing nasal symptoms.
  • Eczema (atopic dermatitis), is a chronic inflammatory skin condition caused by a defect in the skin barrier.

Did you know? A child can catch up to 8 to 10 colds a year before they turn 2. With each exposure to cold viruses, they build up immunity and get fewer colds as they grow.

Common paediatric orthopaedic conditions

Paediatric orthopaedic conditions affect children's musculoskeletal system, which comprises the muscles, bones, joints, ligaments and tendons. Some conditions are congenital (from birth), while others develop along the way.

Early diagnosis and treatment increase the chances of a full recovery, more so for children as their bodies are still growing and adapting. Some children outgrow their conditions as they develop, while others need longer intervention.

At Parkway East Hospital, we work closely with families to provide the support that your child needs during recovery. Depending on your child's condition, we will closely monitor their symptoms and adjust the treatment as they grow.

As children's immune system gets stronger and their bodies and minds mature, proper medical care will put them on the path to becoming healthy adults.
