Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS)

  • What is Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS)?

Parkway East, Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS)

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a minimally invasive procedure used to visualise, diagnose and treat sinus problems. An ears, nose and throat (ENT) specialist will gently insert a small instrument, called an endoscope, into your nostril to examine the area to be operated on and then use specialised tools to restore drainage and ventilation between your nose and sinuses.

Your sinuses are hollow cavities in your skull that can fill up with mucus and become inflamed and swollen when infected. This swelling blocks the flow of the mucus and results in sinusitis.

If your sinusitis does not improve with conventional medical treatments such as antibiotics, nasal sprays or medication, your ENT specialist may advise you to take a computed tomography (CT) scan to evaluate your condition and decide whether you should undergo FESS.

  • Open sinus procedures often require facial incisions (cuts), resulting in visible scars and the need for nasal packing. With FESS, your surgeon can have a better view within your nose and sinuses so surgery is almost always done completely through the nostrils, leaving no visible signs and minimal scarring. This means that you will experience less post-operative pain and bleeding, leading to faster recovery. FESS also reduces the need for nasal packing (using gauze to control bleeding in the nose), allowing you to breathe normally through your nose with minimal discomfort.

  • At Parkway East Hospital, you can look forward to receive treatment in a warm and comforting environment. Our friendly staff and specialists are here to see you through each step of your journey towards recovery.
