In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)

  • What is In Vitro Fertilisation?

Parkway East, Minimally Invasive Surgery – Laparoscopic Surgery

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is a form of assisted reproduction that involves extracting mature eggs and sperm from the parents-to-be, combining them in a safe laboratory setting, and then placing the fertilised embryo(s) into the mother’s uterus. It is a complex artificial insemination procedure that can be the only option for many infertile couples to experience parenthood.

    IVF CYCLE

Pre-treatment tests and preparation – The couple is tested to determine the exact cause for infertility and allow the doctor to tailor a treatment plan for the couple’s specific needs.

Oocyte (Egg) retrieval – During the woman’s ovulation period, eggs will be extracted from her ovarian follicles Semen collection - Once the eggs are retrieved, the man’s semen sample will be collected. This procedure can also be done prior to the egg collection, and the sperm will then be frozen for use after the egg is retried.

Insemination, fertilisation and embryo cultivation – The retrieved eggs are cultured in an incubator, and then insemination is performed using the healthy semen collected. The state of fertilisation is assessed and progress is tracked daily. During this time, the embryos are placed in optimal conditions for a high chance at fertilisation.

Embryo transfer – The embryo(s) are transferred into the woman’s uterus using a very fine catheter which is passed through the cervix. The procedure is performed under abdominal ultrasound scan guidance to ensure correct placement of the embryos.

Embryo cryopreservation (freezing) – Any excess good quality embryos will be stored for future use.

Pregnancy testing – A urine or serum test for pregnancy will be performed after the embryo transfer.

First ultrasound to determine viability – If the pregnancy test is positive, a fetal viability scan will be performed after that to determine the health of the pregnancy.

  • IVF is the only fertility treatment for women with damaged or blocked fallopian tubes. It is also an effective fertility treatment for women facing the below problems:

    • Ovulatory dysfunction
    • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
    • Ovarian cysts
    • Endometriosis
    • Fibroids
    • Previous tubal ligation/sterilisation
    • Uterine abnormalities

IVF can also be used to help women who need their eggs removed due to cancer treatment. The eggs will be stored in cryopreservation until a later time.

For men experiencing low semen count, weak semen strength, dysfunctional semen delivery, or having had a previous vasectomy, IVF can be useful with Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection, which utilises a sharp glass needle to inject a functional sperm directly into the centre of the egg.  Similar to women, men facing cancer treatment can also have their semen collected for future fertility treatment using IVF.
