Robotic Thyroid Surgery

  • Understanding the Procedure

    Robotic Thyroid Surgery

Robotic thyroid surgery, also known as robotic thyroidectomy, is a minimally invasive procedure that involves removing a part or the entire thyroid gland with the assistance of the da Vinci® surgical system. Unlike conventional open surgery which requires a larger cut in the neck to reach the thyroid gland, this robotic procedure only involves making a small cut in the armpit.

The da Vinci® system maximises the tight surgical space provided by a small cut by making use of 4 articulated robotic arms and a high-performance vision system. The allows the surgeon to operate with accuracy and dexterity while aided by highly magnified images of the interior of the body.

  • Some benefits of robotic thyroidectomy surgery include:

    • Less or no visible scars on your neck
    • Reduced chances of anterior (front) neck numbness
    • Reduced risk of affected parathyroid gland (small hormone glands in your neck that control calcium levels in your bones and blood)
    • Reduced chances of laryngeal (voicebox) nerve damage

Robotic thyroidectomy surgery is the recommended treatment for several thyroid conditions, such as:

    • Thyroid nodules (non-cancerous and cancerous)
    • Goitres (swollen thyroid gland)
    • Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
  • Patients can benefit from Parkway East Hospital's advanced equipment and facilities. Minimally invasive techniques reduce trauma and scarring while improving success rates and recovery, and computer-aided robotic surgery increases precision during surgical procedures.
