Minimally Invasive Surgery – Laparoscopic Surgery

  • Understanding the procedure

Parkway East, Minimally Invasive Surgery – Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery, also known as keyhole or minimally invasive surgery, reduces trauma to the body caused by conventional open surgery because the incisions made are much smaller. This efficient procedure is performed with advanced laparoscopic instruments inserted through 3 – 4 tiny buttonhole incisions. Your surgeon will be able to view enhanced and detailed images of your internal organs by inserting a viewing scope through these incisions. After the procedure, the tiny incisions are stitched up, leaving you with minimal visible scarring.

Laparoscopic surgery can be used for diagnostic purposes and laparoscopic techniques are used in a wide range of surgeries and procedures including:

    • Appendectomy – surgical removal of your appendix
    • Adrenalectomy – surgical removal of one or both of your adrenal glands
    • Cholecystectomy – surgical removal of your gallbladder
    • Examination of the common bile duct (the tube that carries bile from your liver and gallbladder to your duodenum) for the presence of stones
    • Treatment of heartburn and acid reflux by surgical correction of your sphincter (the muscle at the lower end of your oesophagus)
    • Hernia repair – surgical treatment of organ protrusion due to a weakened abdominal wall
    • Colon surgery
    • Intestinal surgery
    • Lap banding – surgical treatment of morbid obesity (the highest scale of obesity)
    • Nephrectomy – surgical removal of a kidney
  • Laparoscopic surgery offers you a number of advantages over an open procedure. These include:

    • Reduced haemorrhaging, which minimises the possibility of you needing a blood transfusion
    • Smaller incisions, which translates to less pain, less medication, a shorter recovery time and less post-operative scarring
    • Shorter hospital stay, often with a same-day discharge, which means less hospital bills and a faster return to your everyday routine
    • Reduced exposure of your internal organs to possible external contaminants thereby reducing your risk of acquiring infections
