Minimally Invasive Surgery – Laparoscopic Surgery

  • Understanding the Procedure

Mount Elizabeth, Minimally Invasive Surgery – Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery, also known as keyhole or minimally invasive surgery, makes smaller incisions and reduces trauma to the body, as compared to the conventional open surgery. This efficient procedure is performed with advanced laparoscopic instruments inserted through 3 – 4 tiny buttonhole incisions. The surgeon will be able to view enhanced and detailed images of the internal organs by inserting a viewing scope through these incisions. After the procedure, the tiny incisions are stitched up, leaving minimal visible scarring.

Laparoscopic surgery can be used for diagnostic purposes and laparoscopic techniques are used in a wide range of surgery and procedures.

Minimally invasive surgery can be conducted using robotic surgery where the surgeon controls the robot from a console. The high definition 3D camera allows a better view of the surgical area and the flexibility of the robotic hands gives the surgeon greater precision and control.

  • Laparoscopic surgery offers a number of advantages over an open procedure. These include:

    • Reduced bleeding, which minimises the need for a blood transfusion
    • Smaller incisions, which translates to less pain, less medication, a shorter recovery time and less post-operative scarring
    • Shorter hospital stay, often with discharge on the same day. This translates to less hospital bills and a faster return to your everyday routine
    • Reduced exposure of internal organs to external contaminants, reducing risk of infection
