Dr Lim Kay Kiat

Dr Lim Kay Kiat is an orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in foot and ankle surgery. He currently practises out of his Mount Elizabeth Novena clinic.

Graduating from the Faculty of Medicine at National University of Singapore (MBBS, 1996), Dr Lim went on pursue postgraduate training in Surgery (MRCS Edinburgh, 2001). The following year, he obtained a Masters of Medicine in Orthopaedic Surgery from the National University of Singapore and was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in Orthopaedic Surgery in 2006. Then, with a training grant awarded by the SingHealth Talent Development Fund, Dr Lim underwent a Foot and Ankle clinical fellowship programme at St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Canada between 2006 and 2007.

Prior to his move to private practice, Dr Lim was a consultant at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Changi General Hospital. During his tenure, he served as Director of the Foot and Ankle Service and played a key role in pioneering the use of maggot debridement therapy in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers. With his interest in sports injuries, Dr Lim also ran a practice at the Changi Sports Medicine Centre.

Research is an aspect of medicine that Dr Lim sets aside time for. He has a particular interest in foot and ankle disorders and gait and has received several research grants to pursue research in these areas. In addition, Dr Lim has been involved in quite a few multi-centre international medical trials, where he was appointed the Singapore Principal Investigator. His works have been published in major orthopaedic scientific journals.

Dr Lim also has a keen interest in teaching and is currently a Clinical Tutor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at National University of Singapore as well as a Clinical Faculty for the SingHealth Orthopaedic Residency Programme. He is also involved in the training of specialist orthopaedic surgeons, acting as mentor and supervisor for surgeons in-training. Outside of his field, Dr Lim has been an instructor for the Advanced Trauma Life Support course since 2004 and has acted as advisor/mentor for biomechanics students from the Faculty of Engineering at National University of Singapore.

Dr Lim’s dedication to sports injuries extends beyond the clinic. He has been part of the medical team covering the Singapore Grand Prix since the inaugural event in 2008. From 2009, he has been the Deputy Chief Medical Officer for the track medical service and is responsible for trackside safety and medical intervention for racing accidents.

Himself a keen endurance athlete, Dr Lim has a personal interest in running and cycling injuries. Not only does he perform rehabilitative, medical and surgical treatment for these injuries, he also focuses on bike fit strategies to prevent and treat overuse cycling injuries.
