Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery

  • What is Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery?

Hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery consists of surgical procedures to treat cancer and other disorders that affect the liver, bile ducts, gallbladder and pancreas. These are among the most challenging and complicated procedures performed in general surgery and therefore require skilled expertise.

Hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery requires a multidisciplinary team to provide a treatment plan for each patient. The team includes hepatobiliary and transplant surgeons, medical oncologists, interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, gastroenterologists and anaesthesiologists. Hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery is performed using advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) and endoscopic procedures. Some common procedures include:

    • Surgical oncology such as pancreaticoduodenectomy, also known as the Whipple procedure (removal of the distal stomach)
    • Gastrointestinal surgery, such as the laparoscopic antireflux procedure (to correct acid reflux)
    • Pancreatic surgery, such as laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy (removal of part of the pancreas)
    • Gallbladder and bile duct surgery, such as laparoscopic cholecystectomy (removal of gallbladder) or reconstruction of bile duct strictures (narrow bile ducts) due to injury
    • Hepatobiliary surgery such as lower transplant and liver resection (removal of a portion of or entire pancreas)
  • Hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery is recommended for the treatment of hepatobiliary and pancreatic cancers and other diseases affecting these organs. Our experienced team of surgeons, interventional endoscopists, hepatologists and radiologists work in concert to deliver the most suitable treatment for you.

Surgery is used for the resection (removal) of primary and metastatic tumours of the liver, gallbladder, bile duct and pancreas. It is also used to treat benign diseases such as cysts, bile duct injuries and strictures (blockage) and portal hypertension. Some tumours affecting the liver, gallbladder and bile duct might require major resections and therefore require complex reconstruction of the bile duct, hepatic artery and portal vein.
