Getting to Know Dr Lee Boon Leng Kevin

Q: What led you to become an orthopaedic surgeon?

During my days as a medical student, I was inspired by Professor Shamal Dasde and Professor Lee Eng Hin to become an orthopaedic surgeon. Their dedication to their patients and their craft led me to choose this speciality. Orthopaedic surgery also allows me to marry my love of medicine and engineering. It gives me great joy to help patients get moving again and return them to an active lifestyle.

Q: In what ways do you think your love for sports complements your practice in treating patients?

As someone who loves sports and has been actively involved in the local cycling scene (I am Vice-President of Leisure Cycling at the Singapore Cycling Federation), I can better empathise with the patient and see things from both a doctor's and athlete's perspective. Being able to understand their injury puts me in a better position to aid them in their recovery, through both conservative and surgical means.

Q: In what ways do you think your expertise can improve your patients’ lives?

My expertise deals with problems of the musculoskeletal system – bones, joints, muscles and tendons. Most patients who are referred to see us have serious conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system and conservative treatments have failed to help them recover. We perform surgery to treat these conditions and aim to return the patients to their level of mobility and function before the injury.
