Dr Chew Min Hoe is a general and colorectal surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore.
He has a special interest in minimally invasive colorectal surgery, as well as advanced pelvic tumour surgery for locally advanced primary and recurrent pelvic cancers. He works with a multidisciplinary team including urologists, orthopaedic surgeons, gynaecologists and plastic surgeons, and is experienced in resecting difficult locally advanced tumours.
He also has an interest in genetic counselling for patients and high-risk family members with hereditary colorectal cancer and syndromes. He has expertise in advanced endoscopy, and perianal surgery such as staple, laser and conventional haemorrhoidectomy, fistula-in-ano and anal fissures.
He was the founding head and senior consultant in the department of surgery at Sengkang General Hospital, and subsequently the division chairman of surgery. He was also promoted to colonel (NS) (Dr) in the Singapore Armed Forces.
Dr Chew graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) with bachelor's degrees in medicine and surgery, and a master's degree in surgery. He became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK and went to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney for his fellowship. In completing his general surgery training, he subspecialised in colorectal surgery.
With 20 years of experience practising medicine, he has performed more than 80 pelvic exenteration surgeries in Singapore.
Besides his clinical work, he is an Adjunct Associate Professor at both the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and Duke-NUS Medical School. He has also held several key administrative roles within SingHealth and Sengkang General Hospital, including Vice-Chairman of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development for the SingHealth Academic Medicine Council (Surgery), as well as positions related to safety, quality, and operating theatre management.
He was the executive committee member and treasurer of the Society of Colorectal Surgeons (Singapore), and is at present, a council member of the College of Surgeons, Singapore.
Dr Chew has received several awards including The Public Service Medal (COVID-19), The COVID-19 Resilience Award, The Commendation Medal (Military), Singapore Health Quality Service Award, SingHealth Excellence Award's Distinguished Young Leader and Singapore Health Gamechanger Award. He has also been awarded The Public Administration Medal (Bronze) at the National Day Awards 2020 and the Singapore Health Quality Service Award (Hero) in 2021 for his efforts in the COVID pandemic.
