Dr Gurpal Singh is an orthopaedic surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital and Parkway East Hospital, Singapore.
He subspecialises in orthopaedic oncology, joint replacement, complex limb reconstruction and sports injuries.
He has more than 15 years of experience. His clinical practice treats bone and soft tissue tumours (benign and malignant), robotic-assisted joint replacement, complex limb reconstruction, and arthroscopic (keyhole) surgeries of the hip and knee, including sports injuries and meniscus/ligament reconstruction.
Dr Singh was a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the National University Hospital (NUH), and a former consultant in surgical oncology at the National University Cancer Institute.
In 2011, he completed his advanced specialist training in orthopaedic surgery and was awarded the inaugural College of Surgeons Gold Medal for being the top candidate in the Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons’ examination. He is a recipient of the Health Manpower Development Plan award and did a 2-year fellowship in orthopaedic surgery.
He was an assistant professor and research director in the department of orthopaedic surgery at the National University of Singapore Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. He continues to be active in teaching and training undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as specialist doctors from the region.
In 2016, he led a team of orthopaedic surgeons to successfully perform a robotic-assisted hip replacement surgery at NUH.
Dr Singh is involved in research on increasing lifespan of joint replacements, newer materials in joint replacement, and preventing infection and early failure of joint replacements. One of his specialist areas of focus is dealing with patients who have metal allergies or develop hypersensitivity reactions to joint replacements.
He led a team and won the Excellence Award (Cost Reduction) in the Asian Hospital Management Awards in 2018 on ‘Improving blood transfusion rates in patients undergoing arthroplasty surgery – A multidisciplinary three-pronged patient blood management program’. He has also published extensively in this field in leading peer-reviewed journals in orthopaedic surgery.
Dr Singh regularly holds public awareness talks on bone and joint problems/cancer and runs charity clinics for the needy.
