Dr Kan is a senior consultant surgeon who has an expertise in Upper Gastrointestinal, Bariatric and Surgical Oncology with a focus specifically on minimally invasive/keyhole surgery (MIS). With fellowships in Tokyo, Hong Kong and Brisbane, he gained hands-on experience at world-renowned centres for keyhole surgery for cancer. He remains at the forefront of surgical oncology and he is one of a few surgeons in this region who can successful use this keyhole approach for stomach and oesophageal cancers. This technique, though surgically very challenging with the need for significantly advance surgical skills, has led to a much faster recovery time, less lung complications (reduction of 30-40% risk of pneumonia), less pain and far fewer complications for all the patients operated this way.
His formative training was in the field of Upper GI & Hepatobiliary surgery at Addenbrookes University Tertiary Surgical Unit, United Kingdom with over 5 years focusing on disease of the Upper GI tract.
After completing his Specialist Surgical training in Cambridge, he devoted several years in international renowned units – The National Cancer Centre and The Cancer Institute (Tokyo, Japan), Prince of Wales Chinese University Hospital (Hong Kong) and Princess Alexandra Hospital (Brisbane, Australia) where he further developed and enhanced his expertise in the field of surgery for stomach and oesophageal cancers both for MIS and advance therapeutic endoscopy. The management of benign Upper GI conditions such as Barrett’s oesophagus, reflux/heartburn/gastritis or simple and complex hiatus hernia is also a focus of his experience and expertise.
His other area of interest is bariatric/metabolic surgery for the overweight/obese patient which is now established as a treatment option for those who are diabetic and obese. He performed his first laparoscopic gastric bypass in 2002 and since then he continues to operated regularly on overweight patients (100kg to over 280kg in weight).
He is regularly invited as a trainer on surgical workshops around the region for laparoscopic surgery in hernia and Upper GI surgery. As a passionate educator he has held many positions involving the training and the continuing education of junior surgeons. He has presented numerous talks at medical conferences throughout the world (USA, UK, France, India, Singapore, Australia, Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand).
