Dr Lai Choon Hin is an orthopaedic surgeon practising in Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, Singapore.
Dr Lai is the first Asian to be appointed Adult Reconstruction Fellow at the Mayo Clinic, USA. In his 2 years at Mayo’s department of orthopaedics, he subspecialised in hip, knee, shoulder, elbow and tumour surgery.
In his 25 years in public service, Dr Lai has gathered experience in treating fractures and spinal conditions, and performed joint replacement surgeries of the hip, knee, shoulder and elbow. He has also treated failed joint replacements, and done robotics and computer navigation of joint replacement surgery.
When he was senior consultant and director of adult reconstruction surgery at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, he worked closely with the department of rheumatology to treat and operate on patients with crippling joint deformities.
As the former president of the Singapore Orthopaedic Association, Dr Lai founded the ASEAN Arthroplasty Association to train surgeons in ASEAN countries. To personally train surgeons, he demonstrated surgeries in China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.
Dr Lai was awarded the PSC Merit Scholarship to study medicine in Singapore, graduating in the top one percentile of the class. He was also awarded the Howard Eddey Medal for topping the examination for the fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
Dr Lai has published papers in medical journals: Current Orthopaedics and Clinical Research, Journal of Trauma, and The Knee.
