Dr Vivien Lim is an endocrinologist practising at Gleneagles Hospital, Singapore.
She is experienced in the treatment and management of general endocrinological conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, osteoporosis, adrenal and pituitary disorders, as well as imbalanced male and female hormones. She also does weight management which she feels is the root cause of many metabolic conditions.
After gaining her Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (UK) and her Masters in internal medicine in Singapore, Dr Lim completed her training in Singapore and was accredited as a specialist in endocrinology.
She was awarded the Health Manpower Development Plan scholarship by the Ministry of Health to gain experience in treating complex cases of endocrinology in the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA.
Prior to joining Gleneagles Hospital, Dr Lim was a consultant in Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) and the Diabetes Centre. During her time there, she helped run clinics in general endocrinology as well as diabetes/metabolic diseases, bone and calcium clinics, and adrenal/pituitary clinics, in addition to providing thyroid and fine needle aspiration cytology services.
Dr Lim also held the post of programme director of the endocrine residency programme while in KTPH, and she was also appointed as a senior lecturer in the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore.
She is currently the Immediate Past President of the ASEAN Federation of Endocrine Societies and sits on the board of the International Society of Endocrinology. She was previously the president of the Endocrine Metabolic Society of Singapore (EMSS) (2016 – 2018), Honorary Secretary of the Osteoporosis Society of Singapore (OSS) (2016 – 2018), and serves as an executive committee member of OSS currently.
Dr Lim has a passion for teaching and has been invited and given talks in numerous international and regional endocrine meetings on a wide variety of topics to both health care professionals and also the public. These talks include diabetes, thyroid, osteoporosis, pituitary and adrenal diseases, obesity and weight management and other hormonal conditions.
She has also organised several regional endocrine conferences and she continues to be active in promoting endocrinology globally. She is the chairperson of the joint International Congress of Endocrinology/ASEAN Federation of Endocrinology/Asia-Oceania of Endocrinology in 2022.
Dr Lim’s other passion is for humanitarian causes and she was the Peer Coordinator of Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) in Singapore. She had been active in past medical missions to places such as Kenya, during the tsunami in 2005 in Sri Lanka and during Typhoon Haiyan and the Bohol earthquake in 2013 in the Philippines. She was awarded the Healthcare Humanity Award in 2014, honouring healthcare workers who are inspirational role models exemplifying the values of courage, extraordinary dedication, selflessness, steadfastness in ethics, compassion and humanity in going the extra mile to offer care and comfort to the sick and infirm.
