Dr Ronnie Mathew is a general surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore.
His subspecialty interest is in colorectal surgery, particularly minimally invasive surgery (robotic and laparoscopic surgery). He does general surgery including appendix, gall bladder, hernias, small bowel tumours and diseases, and intestinal obstruction. He handles colonoscopy for colorectal cancer as well as complex ano-proctology, inflammatory bowel diseases, functional bowel disorders, pelvic floor diseases and trans-anal.
Before joining private practice, he was a senior consultant surgeon in the department of colorectal surgery, division of surgery and surgical oncology at Singapore General Hospital and a senior consultant at the National Cancer Centre Singapore.
Dr Mathew undertook his surgical training in the UK and completed three years of clinical research in surgery. He undertook various international fellowships in Singapore, South Korea and Switzerland. Subsequently, he returned to the UK to be a consultant at one of UK’s busiest tertiary hospitals. While there, he was instrumental as a co-lead in setting up the robotic surgery programme. He was part of subspecialist group for treating pelvic floor disorders in Leicestershire and for trans-anal minimally invasive surgery for early rectal cancer in the East Midlands region. He was a UK national-level faculty trainer for transanal endoscopic operations. He was awarded the ‘British Travelling Fellow to USA’ and undertook fellowships at Cleveland Clinic in Florida and UCI Medical Center in California.
He has more than 27 years’ surgical experience and is one of the few surgeons currently in private practice in Singapore, who has a dual specialist registration in general surgery from both the UK (General Medical Council) and Singapore (Singapore Medical Council). Dr Mathew is a keen proponent of robotic surgery and was amongst the first group of six colorectal surgeons in Europe to be accredited to undertake robotic colorectal surgery by the European Association of Robotic Colorectal Surgery.
He was also a clinical assistant professor at Duke-NUS Medical School and a clinical senior lecturer at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.
Dr Mathew is a member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Robotic Surgery Society of Singapore, Society of Colorectal Surgeons, Singapore, European Association of Robotic Colorectal Surgeons, Association of Coloproctology Great Britain Ireland, European Society of Coloproctology and European Society of Surgical Oncology.
