Astrocytoma - Diagnosis & Treatment

How is astrocytoma diagnosed?

Diagnosis of astrocytoma typically involves:

  • Neurological examination to assess brain function so as to identify areas affected by the tumour.
  • Imaging such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the most effective tool for visualising brain tumours and determining their extent.
  • Biopsy by taking a tissue sample either through surgery or using a needle guided by imaging to classify the tumour.

How is astrocytoma treated?

Treatment of astrocytoma depends on the tumour grade:

  • Surgery is the primary treatment for accessible astrocytomas, aiming to remove as much of the tumour as possible.
  • Radiation therapy isused post-surgery or for tumours that cannot be completely removed to control growth.
  • Chemotherapy is often used for higher-grade tumours alongside radiation.
  • Targeted therapy involves drugs designed to target specific aspects of cancer cells, used mainly in clinical trials.

Each treatment is tailored to the individual's condition, with a focus on managing symptoms and maintaining quality of life.
