Paediatric Dentistry

Part of: Paediatric Care

Paediatric dentistry is a specialised field dedicated to the oral health of children from infancy through late adolescence. Unlike general dentists, paediatric dental specialists focus exclusively on young patients, addressing their unique needs at every stage of growth.

At Parkway East Hospital, our dedicated paediatric dentistry service is led by Dr Terry Teo and Dr Elizabeth Tan, who are adept in performing specialised dental care within a safe and supportive hospital environment.

Our approach emphasises prevention, early intervention, and restoration of oral health. From managing cavities and dental trauma to guiding the proper alignment of teeth and jaws, we aim to provide comprehensive care that ensures a child’s oral health develops in harmony with their overall growth.

Common conditions treated by our paediatric dentists

These widespread cavities can affect children as young as 1-year-old, especially those with medical conditions. Treatment may include fillings, paediatric crowns, root canal therapy, or extractions. For severe cases or very young children, procedures may need to be performed under general anaesthesia to ensure safety and comfort.

Accidents affecting primary or permanent teeth are common among children. Prompt and precise trauma management, combined with regular follow-ups, is essential to minimise long-term damage to the teeth and gums, preserving both function and appearance.

Conditions like overbites, underbites, or crooked teeth are increasingly prevalent. Early intervention, typically between ages 8 – 11, can prevent the need for extensive orthodontic treatment or even jaw surgery later in adolescence, ensuring a healthier and more comfortable bite.

Impacted wisdom teeth in teenagers can cause lifelong pain, damage adjacent teeth, and lead to alignment issues. Early removal as soon as these teeth erupt can prevent these complications and support overall dental health.
